Luhansk

Industrial city in the Donets Basin area of eastern Ukraine, 125 km/78 mi northeast of Donetsk; population (2001) 463,100. Locomotives, textiles, and mining machinery are produced in the city.

Luhansk was founded in 1795 as a coalmining centre and a location for iron foundries producing cannon. The city was renamed Voroshilovgrad in honour of Soviet Marshal Voroshilov (1881–1969).
