Luini, Bernardino (c. 1460-c. 1530)

Italian painter. Strongly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, he painted many religious works, such as the frescoes (1525) in the church of Sta Maria dei Miracoli, Saronno, near Milan, and the oil painting Christ Among the Doctors (National Gallery, London).

Born in Luino, on Lake Maggiore, he may have been a pupil of Ambrogio Borgogne - he was probably a follower rather than a pupil of Leonardo. He was known to be active by 1512, an early work being a fragment of fresco, Head of a Girl (Wallace Collection, London), cut from a large decoration at the Villa Pelucca, a country house near Milan.
