Luks, George Benjamin (1867–1933)

US painter and graphic artist. A member of the Ashcan School, his paintings capture the excitement and colour of life in New York City's slums.

Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and worked as an illustrator and cartoonist 1894–96 for various newspapers. Robert Henri convinced him to take up painting.
