Lumberton

City and administrative headquarters of Robeson County, southeastern North Carolina, on the Lumber River, 48 km/30 mi southwest of Fayetteville; population (2000) 20,800. It is a tobacco and agricultural market centre with products including textiles, clothing, and tobacco products.

Founded in 1787, it developed as a distribution point for lumber and naval stores.
