Luo

Member of the second-largest ethnic group of Kenya, living in the Lake Victoria region and numbering around 2,650,000 (1987). The Luo are a Nilotic people who traditionally lived by farming livestock. Many, however, now work as wage labourers throughout East Africa. Traditionally they had a strong clan system without centralized political authority. Their religion includes beliefs in a supreme creator, Nyasi, and ancestor worship. The Luo language is of the Nilo-Saharan family.
