Lupino, Ida

Lupino, Ida (1918–1995)

English-born US actor and film director. She played tough and determined women in thrillers such as High Sierra (1941). Later, while continuing to act, she set up an independent production company in 1949, for which she directed several low-budget films during the 1950s.

Lupino was the only woman directing feature films in Hollywood during the 1950s. Her works include The Hitch-Hiker (1953), an all-male suspense story, and the domestic drama The Bigamist (1953).
