Luristan

Mountainous province in western Iran; area 28,800 sq km/11,120 sq mi; population (1991) 1,501,800. The capital is Khorramabad. The province is primarily inhabited by the Lur people who herd sheep and cattle. Excavation in the area has revealed a culture of the 8th-7th century BC with bronzes decorated with animal forms; its origins are uncertain.

Luristan is bounded to the north by the provinces of Kermanshahan, Hamadan, and Markazi, to the east by Isfahan, to the south by Khuzestan, and to the west by Ilam.
