Lusignan

French town in the département of Vienne, 23 km/14 mi southwest of Poitiers; population (1990) 10,400. It has a church of the 11th–15th centuries. The castle of Lusignan (now ruined) was founded, according to legend, by the fairy Melusina, who was also the protectress of the great feudal family of Lusignan, one branch of which ruled Cyprus and Jerusalem 1191–1489.
