Luthuli (or Lutuli), Albert John (c. 1898–1967)

South African politician, president of the African National Congress 1952–67. Luthuli, a Zulu tribal chief, preached nonviolence and multiracialism. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1960 for his advocacy of a nonviolent struggle against apartheid.
