Luxembourg, Francois Henri de Montmorency-Bouteville, duc de

    0.02 sec.

Luxembourg, Francois Henri de Montmorency-Bouteville, duc de (1628–1695)

French soldier. He was a marshal of France who three times defeated William of Orange. A cousin of the ‘Great Conde’, he shared Conde's fortunes in the wars of the Fronde. He was pardoned by Louis XIV on his return to France (1659).

He was born in Paris. He was created a peer (1661). He served in the Netherlands (1667), and defeated William of Orange at Woerden (1672). His retreat from Utrecht (1673), in the face of tremendous odds, was masterly. In 1690 he defeated the allied troops at Fleurus, and routed his old enemy, now William III of England, at Steinkirk (1692), and at Neerwinden (1693).
