Luzerne County

County in eastern Pennsylvania; area 2,309 sq km/891 sq mi; population (1990) 328,100. Its capital is Wilkes-Barre. Proximity to the huge deposits of anthracite coal in the Wyoming Valley spurred the county's development, and the decline of the coalmining industry has brought economic difficulties.

The Susquehanna River flows through the north of the county.
