Any of 80 species of rush in the family Juncaceae, mostly native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia. The leaves are somewhat grasslike but have long, straight, cottony hairs at their bases and margins. The great woodrush, Luzula sylvatica, with leaves up to 2.5 cm/1 in wide, is abundant in damp woods in the west and north of Britain; several smaller species occur in various habitats including woods and moist grassland.
