Lycoperdon

Genus of about 50 fungi, in the order Lycoperdales of the subdivision Basidiomycetes. They are the common puffballs, and have a warty skin. They usually grow on the ground and are edible when young. The common puffball L. perlatum grows to a diameter of up to 6 cm/2 in; unlike the other puffballs, L. pyriforme grows on dead wood, often in large numbers.
