Lynch, David (1946– )

US film director. He first came to prominence with the macabre stream-of-consciousness film Eraserhead (1976). His surreal style was subsequently seen in, for example, Blue Velvet (1987) and the cult television series Twin Peaks (1990). His film Wild at Heart (1990) won the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival and in 2001 he shared the best director prize at the festival with US director Joel Coen for Mulholland Drive (2001).

Exploring his obsession with social misfits, Lynch made The Elephant Man (1980), about the disfigured Victorian John Merrick. Other films include Lost Highway (1996), Dune (1984), and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992). Lynch departed from his strange, surrealist style in The Straight Story (1999), based on the true story of Alvin Straight who at 73 travelled across the USA on a lawnmower.
