Lynton and Lynmouth

Twin resort towns on the north coast of Devon, southwest England, on the Bristol Channel, 19 km/12 mi east of Ilfracombe; population (2001) 1,840. The fishing village of Lynmouth, on the shore, is linked by a steep road and cliff railway (1890) to Lynton, 152 m/500 ft above at the top of a cliff.

In August 1952, 22.5 cm/9 in of rainfall within 24 hours on Exmoor caused disastrous flooding at Lynmouth, leaving 31 people dead and the harbour and over 100 buildings severely damaged. The harbour and much of the town were later rebuilt.

Silver used to be mined nearby at Combe Martin, west of Lynton.
