Lyssavirus

Type of virus that includes rabies. A new lyssavirus was identified in Australian fruitbats in 1996.

The Old World fruit bats of the family Pteropodidae, particularly species belonging to the genus Pteropus, have been considered natural hosts for viruses emerging in Australia (Hendra virus [HeV], Australian bat lyssavirus [ABLV], and Menangle virus), Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh (Nipah virus [NiV]) (1,2).
The AAHL researchers wanted to add to the Lyssavirus family tree both Fraser's virus and a virus from a bat dissected in 1995 and recently proffered for testing by a Townsville wildlife biologist.
