Lyubimov, Yuri (Betrovich) (1917– )

Russian-born Israeli stage director. Artistic director of the Taganka Theatre at Moscow, 1964–84, he has staged The Queen of Spades at the Paris Opéra; Don Giovanni in Budapest; Khovanshchina at La Scala, Milan; Rigoletto in Florence; Tristan und Isolde at Bologna; and Mussorgsky's Salambo in Paris and Naples, in 1986. His staginngs at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1986 and 1988, of Jenůfa and Das Rheingold, both had a strong sense of theatre and vivid stage pictures. During the 1991 season, he staged For the Love of Three Oranges at Munich.
