Médéa

Department in north-central Algeria, lying between the Tell and Saharan Atlas; area 61,240 sq km/23,645 sq mi; population (1994 est) 770,000.

Médéa

Town in the Médéa department of north-central Algeria, situated 65 km/40 mi south of Algiers; population (1998 est) 119,500. The town is situated on a plateau with a good water supply and fertile soil, and produces grapes, fruit, cereals, and wines. Industries now include pumps and irrigation equipment. Médéa is located on the site of Lamdia, a Roman military post.

Médéa was occupied by the French in 1840.
