Mühlberg, Battle of

    0.01 sec.

Mühlberg, Battle of

Battle fought near the German town of Mühlberg, on the bank of the River Elbe, in 1547. It was a victory for the forces under the personal command of Emperor Charles V over a Lutheran alliance led by John Frederick, Elector of Saxony. By this triumph Charles hoped he was in a position to achieve religious harmony in his German realms and at the Interim of Augsburg the following year he attempted to draw up the necessary settlement.

A portrait of Charles on horseback (now in the Prado, Madrid) was painted by Titian to celebrate the victory.
