Mülheim an der Ruhr

Industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the River Ruhr, 25 km/16 mi northeast of Düsseldorf; population (1995) 176,700. Industries include heavy engineering, iron and steel, building materials, construction, and wholesale trading.

The harbour can take barges of up to 2,300 tonnes and is effectively the head of navigation on the Ruhr. There is a fortress with origins dating from 883, but the structure is 12th century. St Peter's church, essentially Romanesque, dates from 1200. There are half-timbered houses in the old town, and the Tersteegenhaus houses the regional museum.
