Müller, Johannes von

Müller, Johannes von (1752–1809)

Swiss historian. He published the first volume of his Geschichten der Schweizer in 1780, and the following year his Essais historiques appeared. His Gerschichte der schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft was published 1786–1808.

Müller was born in Neukirch, near Schaffhausen. He became professor of Greek at the Collegium Humanitatis at Schaffhausen in 1772. In 1786 he was appointed librarian to the Elector-Archbishop of Mainz. Napoleon made him secretary of state for Westphalia in 1807, and later a privy councillor and director of public instruction.
