Town in Sibiu county, central Romania, on the River Tirnava Mare, 40 km/25 mi north of Sibiu; population (2002) 55,200. Glass, leather goods, textiles, and chemicals are manufactured, there are engineering and food-processing industries, and natural gas wells are found in the area.
