Jacobabad

City in Sind province, southeast Pakistan, 400 km/250 mi northeast of Karachi; population (1998 est) 137,700. Founded by Gen John Jacob as a frontier post, the city now trades in wheat, rice, and millet, irrigated by canals fed by the Indus. Industries include rice and flour milling and the manufacture of carpets and wooden toys. The city has a low annual rainfall (about 5 cm/2 in) and temperatures are among the highest in the Indian subcontinent – up to 53°C/127°F.
