Mabillon, Jean (1632–1707)

French historian. He joined the Benedictines (1653). From 1664 he edited huge numbers of manuscripts at the abbey of St Germain-des-Prés in Paris. The result was Acta Sanctorum ordinis Sancti Benedicti (1668–1702), his monumental history of the order. His De Re Diplomatica (1681) is an important contribution to Latin palaeography.
