MacColla, Fionn (1906–1975)

Scottish writer. His novels and philosophical studies include The Albannach 1932, And the Cock Crew 1945, Scottish Noel 1958, Ane Tryall of Heretiks 1962, At the Sign of the Clenched Fist 1967, and Too Long in this Condition 1975.

Born in Montrose, he was educated at Aberdeen and Glasgow universities and taught in Palestine, the West Highlands, and Edinburgh. He became a socialist, then a Scottish nationalist, and was converted from an extreme Calvinist sect to Roman Catholicism, experiences which are powerfully reflected in his works.
