MacCready, Paul Beattie (1925–2007)

US designer of the Gossamer Condor aircraft, which made the first controlled flight by human power alone in 1977. His Solar Challenger flew from Paris, France, to London, England, under solar power, and in 1985 he constructed a powered model of a giant pterosaur, an extinct flying animal. In 1997 his uncrewed solar-powered aircraft Pathfinder set a new altitude record for propeller-driven planes: 21.8 km/13.5 mi.
