MacLellan, Robert

    0.04 sec.

MacLellan, Robert (1907- )

Scottish playwright. His plays are well constructed with a strong historical sense and good characterization, but because they are written in Scots have had only a limited readership. They include Jeddart Justice (1934), The Changeling (1935), Toom Byres (1936), Jamie the Saxt (1937), The Flouers o Edinburgh (1947), Rab Mossgiel (1959) (about Robert Burns), Young Auchinleck (1962) (about James Boswell), and The Hypocrite (1970).

MacLellan was born in Lesmahago. After serving in the Faeroe Islands during World War II, he became associated with James Bridie and the Curtain Theatre of Glasgow, producing for it a series of plays. He also wrote for the Citizens' Theatre, and later for the BBC. Short stories and a dramatic poem, ‘Sweet Largie Bay’ (1956), appeared in periodicals.
