MacMonnies, Frederick William

MacMonnies, Frederick William (1863–1937)

US sculptor. An assistant of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1880 and 1887–89), he studied in Paris, France (1884), then worked there (1889–1915), before returning permanently to New York City. He created many public naturalistic sculptures, such as Civic Virtue (1919), located in City Hall Park, New York City. MacMonnies was born in Brooklyn, New York.
