MacNee, (Daniel) Patrick (1922– )

English actor. He achieved fame as the archetypal Englishman John Steed in the 1960s fantasy espionage television series The Avengers (1961–69) and its sequel, The New Avengers (1976–77). Having made an early film debut in Sailors Three (1940), he often appeared as cowboys in Hollywood Westerns. His later films include The Sea Wolves (1980) and A View to a Kill (1985)

Other work includes the films Sailors Three (1940), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Hamlet (1948), and Les Girls (1957); the Canadian television series The Moonstone; and the role of a sheriff in the US television Western series Rawhide.

MacNee was born in London, and chose acting as a career after being expelled from Eton College. His cousin was the actor David Niven.
