MacNeil, Cornell (1922– )

US baritone. He became well known after appearing in Menotti's The Consul in 1950 and joined the New York City Opera Company. He also appeared at La Scala, Milan, in 1959, as Carlo in Ernani; in 450 performances at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York 1959–87, as Amonasro, Iago, Scarpia, Nabucco, Luna, and Rigoletto (the role he sang at his house debut); and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he made his debut in 1967, as Macbeth.
