Macal, Zdenek (1936– )

Czech-born US conductor. He studied at Brno and conducted the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra 1963–67. He made his debut with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in 1966, at the Prague Spring Festival, and subsequently made tours throughout Europe. In 1969 he made his UK debut, with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and in 1972 his US debut, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was music director of the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra 1970–74; music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra from 1986; principal of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra 1988–92; and artistic director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra from 1993. In 1990 he conducted Prince Igor at Grant Park, Chicago.
