Maceió

Port, industrial city, and capital of Alagoas federal unit (state), northeast Brazil, on the Atlantic coast; population (2000) 795,800. There are petrochemical, sugar, tobacco, textile, and timber industries. Maceió is also a tourist resort with many beaches.

Tourism is growing in importance as evidenced by the growth in the hotel sector between Panta Verde and Praia de Jatiúca.
