Macerata

Capital of Macerata province in Le Marche region, east-central Italy, 35 km/22 mi south of Ancona; population (1993 est) 42,900. Products include chemicals, glass, musical instruments, furniture, food, and beer; industries include building and engineering. There is a trade in agricultural produce. Macerata has a cathedral, some fine Renaissance buildings, a small university (1290), and an important library.
