Machynlleth

Town in Powys, central Wales, situated on the River Dovey, 17 km/10 mi south of Dolgellau; population (2001) 2,150. Agriculture and forestry were formerly the main local economic activities, but tourism has also become an important industry. The Centre for Alternative Technology, an educational charity, attracts large numbers of visitors, and there is also a craft centre and a nature reserve.

Owen Glendower summoned a parliament here in 1402.

Byline: ROB DAVIES SIX hundred years after it hosted Owain Glyndwer's Welsh Parliament, Machynlleth is putting itself firmly on the map again - the map of Tolkien's Middle Earth.
Four other people, including a four year old boy - all from the Cheshire area - were thrown clear as the Land Rover flipped over into the stream near Machynlleth in Powys.
Machynlleth is typical of how smaller towns used to be.
