Mackay

Town and port in Queensland, northeast Australia, on the Pacific coast near the mouth of the River Pioneer, 962 km/598 mi north of Brisbane; population (2001) 57,600. Mackay is situated in Queensland's sugar-producing belt, and it has been estimated that the town accounts for over 25 % of Australia's sugar production. Coal is mined in the Bowen Basin and exported through the Hay Point Coal Terminal. Other products are butter, timber, and tobacco. It is also a tourist centre for the Great Barrier Reef.

Mackay has a tropical climate, good beaches, and boating facilities. It provides access to the Eungalla and Hillsborough National Parks. Captain John Mackay explored the region in 1860, and Mackay was named after him on its foundation in 1862.

Mackay's sugar terminal is capable of holding over 700,000 tonnes of sugar.
