Mackinac Island

Island in the Straits of Mackinac, Michigan, between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron; population (1990) 469. It lies just east of the bridge across the Straits of Mackinac; length 5 km/3 mi, width 3 km/2 mi; area 10 sq km/4 sq mi. Visited by the French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1634–35, it became the chief fur-trading centre of a vast region.

Fort Mackinac was built by the French army, but lost to the British. Under British rule from 1761 onwards, the island passed to the USA in 1783. The island is a popular tourist destination, though no private cars are allowed.
