Mackinaw City

Village in Cheboygan and Emmet counties, in the far north of Michigan's Lower Peninsula; population (2000) 860. This summer resort stands opposite St Ignace on the Straits of Mackinac.

The village was established as a French trading post in 1673, and became Fort Michilimackinac in 1715. The British captured the fort in 1760, and it was held at various times thereafter by the French and Indians (see French and Indian War). The modern settlement was laid out in 1857, and its name was shortened in 1894.
