Mackinnon, William (1823–1893)

Scottish merchant. He founded the British East Africa Company, and cofounded the British India Steam Navigation Company. In 1878 Mackinnon leased large strips of the East African coast for Great Britain from the Sultan of Zanzibar. The East Africa Company opened up trade and helped suppress the slave trade in East Africa.

He was born in Argyll.
