Macomb

City and seat of McDonough County, in west-central Illinois; population (1990) 20,000. Macomb stands on the East Fork of the La Moine River, 63 km/39 mi southwest of Galesburg.

Founded in 1829 as Washington, Macomb developed into a centre for farming and coalmining. It now produces art pottery, porcelain ware, and roller bearings, and there is also some agricultural processing. Western Illinois University (founded 1899) is located in the city, and . Argyle Lake State Park lies 8 km/5 mi to the west.
