Macon, Nathaniel (1757–1837)

US politician. A Republican, he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives (1791–1815) and the US Senate (1815–28). A defender of slavery, he led the Republican opposition to any Federalist proposals, becoming known for his negative votes. After his retirement he championed states' rights and Martin Van Buren's candidacy for the US presidency. Macon was born in Edgecombe, North Carolina. Although he came north to serve in the New Jersey militia in 1777, he opposed the Constitution. He was member of the North Carolina senate (1780–84).
