Macrinus, Marcus Opellius (AD 164–218)

Roman emperor from AD 217. Macrinus was born in Caesarea, Mauritania, admitted to the service of the emperor Septimus Severus, and eventually became praetorian prefect under the emperor Caracalla. He arranged the assassination of Caracalla and was proclaimed emperor by the troops, but was murdered the following year by the generals of Elagabalus, who succeeded him.
