Macroom

Macroom

Town in County Cork, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 2,800. It is an important market centre, close to a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking district) to the west. Macroom has a number of small manufacturing concerns, including electronics, computer hardware, and packaging. There are some fine Georgian houses here.

Macroom was once one of the main seats of the MacCarthys, and was granted in 1654 to Admiral William Penn (father of the founder of the state of Pennsylvania). The castle has been demolished.
