Mactan

Small coral island off the east coast of Cebu Island in the Philippines; area 62 sq km/24 sq mi. Mactan is joined to Cebu Island by a bridge, and is the site of Cebu's airport. Its small cultivable area is used for growing coconuts. Tourism is a major industry, with exclusive beach hotels on the island. The explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed here in 1521.

There is a memorial on the beach at Punta Encaño dedicated to chief Lapu-Lapu who killed Magellan in a skirmish.
