Madama Butterfly

Opera by Puccini (libretto by Giacosa and L Illica, based on David Belasco's dramatic version of a story by John Luther Long), produced at La Scala, Milan, on 17 February 1904. US naval officer Pinkerton marries Madam Butterfly while visiting Japan. After fathering a son, he abandons her for an American wife. Japanese codes of honour require that Madam Butterfly commits suicide.
