Madame Récamier

Unfinished portrait by the French neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David, begun in 1800. Juliette Récamier, wife of a rich banker, was then 23. The interior detail depicted reflects the severely classical taste by which David gave an impetus to the Empire style of furniture design.

The painting was left unfinished, possibly because the sitter had asked François Gérard also to paint her. The chaise longue belonged to David's studio and was one of the designs carried out for him by the cabinet-maker Georges Jacob.
