Madariaga, Salvador de (1886–1978)

Spanish author and diplomat. His works include Shelley and Calderón and other Essays 1920; ‘Don Quixote’ 1934, an introductory essay; The World's Design 1938; Christopher Columbus 1939; Hernán Cortes 1941; The Fall of the Spanish-American Empire and The Rise of the Spanish-American Empire both 1947; Bolívar 1952; Democracy versus Liberty 1958; and Latin America between the Eagle and the Bear 1962.

Madariaga was born in La Coruña and educated in Paris, where he learned to write Spanish, English, and French with equal facility. For a time he was connected with the permanent bureaux of the League of Nations, and later was professor in Spanish studies at Oxford. When the Spanish republic was proclaimed, Madariaga was sent as minister to the USA. He was ambassador to France 1932–34, chief Spanish delegate to the League of Nations 1931–36, and minister of education 1934.
