Maddalena, James (1954– )

US baritone. He studied at the New England Conservatory and made his debut with the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1974. He was associated with the director Peter Sellars from 1981, notably as Don Giovanni, in Handel's Orlando (1982), Così fan tutte (1984), Haydn's Armida and Giulio Cesare (1985), and created two roles in operas by John Adams: the title role in Nixon in China (Houston, 1987) and the Captain in The Death of Klinghoffer (Brussels). He made further appearances in Sellars productions of Figaro, as the Count and Die Zauberflöte, as Papageno (Glyndebourne, 1990), and created Merlin in the premiere of Tippett's New Year at Houston in 1989.
