Albright, Madeleine (1937- )

US diplomat and Democrat politician, Secretary of State 1997-2001. An adviser to leading Democrat politicians from the early 1970s, she was US ambassador to the United Nations 1993-97.

Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of a Czech diplomat. After spending World War II in exile in London, her family secured asylum in the USA following the communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948. She was a university professor and adviser on international affairs before becoming the country's first female secretary of state in 1997.

She published a memoir, Madam Secretary, in 2003.
