Madera

City and seat of Madera County, in central California; population (1990) 29,300. Madera lies in the San Joaquin Valley, on the Fresno River 32 km/20 mi northwest of Fresno. The market and processing centre for an irrigated agricultural region, it has wineries and canneries, as well as lumber, meat-packing, and metal industries.
