Madetoja, Leevi (Antti) (1887–1947)

Finnish conductor, critic, and composer. He conducted the Helsinki orchestra 1912–14, and afterwards that of Viborg. In 1916 he became a music critic at Helsinki and teacher at the Conservatory there, and began teaching at Helsinki University in 1926.

Maetoja was born at Uleaaborg. He studied at the Conservatory of his native town, then with Järnefelt and Sibelius at Helsinki, and afterwards with d'Indy in Paris and Fuchs in Vienna.

Opera

Pohjalaisia (1924) and Juha (1935); ballets.

Orchestral

three symphonies (1916, 1918, 1926), symphonic poems and overtures.

Vocal

Stabat Mater; eight cantatas.

Chamber

piano trio, violin and piano sonata; Lyric Suite for cello and piano.

Other

piano pieces; songs.
